New Delhi: Apple’s smartphone shipments have performed strongly throughout 2025, particularly in Q3, Counterpoint Research said on Wednesday, adding that the iPhone maker shipments will reach a global share of 19.4 per cent in 2025, making Apple the world’s top smartphone company for the first time since 2011. Samsung’s shipments are also expected to grow 4.6 per cent (year-on-year) and reach a global share of 18.7 per cent, yet the company will relinquish the top spot it has held for more than a decade, the report noted. iPhone shipments exceeded expectations in Q3 2025, posting a solid 9 per cent YoY growth for the quarter. The launch of the iPhone 17 series marked a shift in Apple’s usual lineup, with the new iPhone Air replacing the Plus model, accompanied by adjustments in memory configurations and pricing tiers. With these structural tailwinds, Apple is well-positioned to surpass Samsung in annual shipments in 2025,” the report noted. Samsung is expected to see a decent 5 per cent shipment growth in 2025, supported by a resilient supply chain that has absorbed much of the tariff impact, it added.

HP Inc. has announced that it plans to cut between 4,000 and 6,000 jobs globally by fiscal 2028 as part of a larger effort to streamline its operations and increase its use of artificial intelligence. The company said the move will help speed up product development, improve customer service and boost overall productivity. Following the announcement, HP’s shares dropped 5.5 per cent in extended trading. HP CEO Enrique Lores said during a media briefing that employees working in product development, internal operations and customer support will be affected by the layoffs. He added that the cost-cutting plan is expected to generate about $1 billion in gross run-rate savings over the next three years. Sanchar Saathi Portal: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) announced on Tuesday that its digital safety initiative, Sanchar Saathi, has enabled the recovery of more than 50,000 lost and stolen mobile handsets across India in October this year. “This record milestone reflects unwavering commitment to secure citizens’ digital assets and public trust in technology-driven governance. The overall recovery nationwide has also crossed the 7 lakh milestone,” according to an official statement. Karnataka and Telangana have emerged as top-performing states, each crossing 1 lakh recoveries, Maharashtra follows with over 80,000. The monthly recoveries of lost and stolen mobile phones have surged by 47 per cent from June to October 2025, underlining the system’s growing efficiency and reach. With the help of this system, more than one handset is being recovered every minute across the country, the statement said. Gmail Data And Privacy: Google has issued a clarification after reports claimed that Gmail was using users’ emails and attachments to train its Gemini AI models. The company called these reports “misleading” and said that no policies have changed. The reports had suggested that Google updated its policy and that users would need to turn off Gmail “smart features” like spell check or order tracking to opt out. Google has clarified that the circulating interpretation is incorrect. In a statement to The Verge, Google spokesperson Jenny Thomson said, “We do not use your Gmail content to train our Gemini AI model.” This response comes after Malwarebytes alleged that the tech giant was analysing private emails and attachments to enhance features like Smart Compose. Further addressing the issue, she stated that “these reports are misleading – we have not changed anyone’s settings, Gmail Smart Features have existed for many years, and we do not use your Gmail content for training our Gemini AI model”.
